Apple ventures with AI for news publishers to explore innovative collaborations

Apple is delving into new frontiers, exploring potential artificial intelligence (AI) partnerships with news publishers and it could have significant implications for the future of news dissemination and consumption.

In recent weeks, the technology behemoth has initiated talks with prominent news and publishing entities, aiming to obtain consent for the incorporation of their content into the development of Apple's generative artificial intelligence systems, as reported by the New York Times on Friday.

Sources familiar with the negotiations revealed that Apple has proposed multiyear agreements, each valued at a minimum of $50 million, to secure licenses for the utilization of news article archives.

Apple reached out to news organizations such as Condé Nast, the publisher of Vogue and the New Yorker, NBC News, and IAC, which owns People, the Daily Beast, and Better Homes and Gardens, as reported by the New York Times.

According to the report, the response from some publishers contacted by Apple was tepid.

Apple has not promptly addressed a Reuters request for comment.

Major technology companies have been making substantial investments in incorporating generative AI. Conversely, Apple has employed this technology to enhance fundamental features in its latest devices.

In October, Apple unveiled new MacBook Pro and iMac computers, along with three new chips to drive them.

The company emphasized that these chips are beneficial for artificial intelligence researchers, as their chatbots and other innovations often face limitations related to the amount of data that can be stored in a computer's memory.
