Apple is reportedly planning a major overhaul of Siri, turning the smart assistant into a full-fledged AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new Siri chatbot, codenamed “Campos” internally, is expected to be integrated into iOS 27 and could be a central feature at Apple’s WWDC 2026 in June.

The chatbot will support both voice and text inputs, marking a shift from Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi’s earlier statements that Siri would not become a chatbot and that AI features should remain seamlessly integrated and accessible.

Sources indicate the change in strategy comes amid mounting pressure from the success of AI chatbots from competitors.

Apple’s push into AI comes as OpenAI prepares to enter the hardware space under the guidance of former Apple design chief Jony Ive, prompting Apple to accelerate its AI initiatives.

The company has faced criticism for lagging behind in AI innovation, repeatedly delaying its “more personalised Siri” updates.

Last year, Apple explored partnerships with AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic before ultimately selecting Google’s Gemini as its AI partner.

The two companies confirmed their collaboration earlier this month, setting the stage for a new era in Apple’s AI strategy.
