Mother leaves children unattended in pool, 4-year-old girl drowns

Tragedy struck in Michigan when a 4-year-old girl drowned in a pool after being left without adult supervision alongside other children.

Deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office were alerted to a potential drowning at Deer Lake Athletic Club at around 7:30pm on Friday (January 30), as per a statement from the sheriff's office.

Investigations reveal two women brought their six kids, aged 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12, to the pool.

"The women placed several flotation devices into the pool and proceeded to the club's bar/restaurant area, ordering food and drinks, leaving the children without supervision," the sheriff's office reported.

The women reportedly stayed in the bar/restaurant area for about 35 minutes, while the children remained unsupervised in the pool.

As noted by the sheriff's office, signs are clearly displayed at both ends of the pool, indicating no lifeguard on duty and that children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

At the time of the incident, no adult was present, and the eldest child at the pool was just 12 years old.

The 4-year-old was retrieved from the pool by her sister before the two women were notified.

When deputies arrived, they found the 4-year-old being given CPR by two men and a woman on the pool deck.

Deputies continued lifesaving measures until paramedics from the Independence Township Fire Department arrived to take the young girl to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The press statement mentioned that investigators found toys and pool noodles present but didn't see any "life preservers." The pool's depth ranged from roughly three to five feet.

In a post on social media, Deer Lake Athletic Club expressed that "emergency services were contacted right away, and staff acted according to established safety and emergency procedures."

The case remains under review and will be presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for further evaluation.
