Grandfather, 76, proves age is no barrier to mastering muscle-ups

Ngai Hin Kwok, a 76-year-old Singapore resident, is challenging conventional perceptions of ageing through a rigorous physical regime that includes calisthenics and cycling.

A member of the "Team Strong Silvers" fitness collective, Mr Kwok maintains a level of mobility that allows him to continue working part-time in the jewellery trade whilst performing advanced athletic feats.

Despite his age, he remains capable of completing five muscle-ups and continues to inspire other seniors to prioritise their physical wellbeing.

Mr Kwok’s journey began in Fujian, China, where watching university students exercise sparked a lifelong passion for movement.

After relocating to Hong Kong and eventually Singapore, he made significant lifestyle changes to preserve his health, including quitting smoking and abstaining from alcohol.

His daily routine begins with light exercise at dawn, followed by afternoon sessions at the gym. He attributes his longevity to a balanced approach to nutrition and a commitment to body-weight training.

The septuagenarian’s lifestyle is defined by several core principles:

  • Physical activity: a daily rotation of callisthenics, pull-ups, and cycling to maintain strength.
  • Simple nutrition: a diet featuring whole-wheat bread, eggs, and sweet potatoes, whilst strictly avoiding oily or fried foods.
  • Mental engagement: dedicating time to singing and teaching Chinese calligraphy at a local activity centre.

Reflecting on his resilience, Mr Kwok noted, “I'm still mobile and able to get around, so I don't see a reason to stop completely.”

He advises fellow seniors to begin with walking and light movements, gradually building stamina to avoid injury and ensure a sustainable path to healthy ageing.
