Dave Grohl admits he 'still' struggles to process death of Taylor Hawkins
Foo Fighters set to release 'Your Favourite Toy' with new drummer Ilan Rubin
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has revealed the enduring psychological toll of losing his close friend and bandmate, Taylor Hawkins.
In a poignant interview with MOJO Magazine, nearly four years after the drummer's sudden passing in 2022, Grohl admitted that he continues to grapple with the tragedy. “Losing Taylor,” Grohl told MOJO, “was never meant to be.”
He explained that the loss “threw our world upside down and made me question everything about life, that it was so unfair. I still have a hard time making sense of it.”
The singer drew parallels between this grief and the "heartbreaking experience" of Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994. Just as he launched the Foo Fighters' debut to navigate his sorrow then, the band felt a familiar necessity to create in the wake of Hawkins’ death and the subsequent passing of Grohl’s mother.
The band “realized this was something we needed to do,” Grohl noted, “Because it had saved us once before...”
During the production of the 2023 album But Here We Are, the band attempted to record live by playing along to drum tracks through speakers. However, the emotional absence was overwhelming.
“But there was no one there,” Grohl shared. “There was just this void, and we were desperately trying to fill it.” Currently, the group is preparing for the 24 April release of their new album, Your Favourite Toy. The current line-up features Grohl, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee, and new drummer Ilan Rubin.
