Five urinary warning signs every man over 50 should never ignore
Dr Rahul Chawla outlines the path to a 95 per cent cancer survival rate
Early diagnosis is the most critical factor in surviving prostate cancer, with experts highlighting a survival rate exceeding 95 per cent when the disease is caught in its initial stages.
Dr Rahul Chawla, a specialist trained at AIIMS New Delhi, recently utilised social media to raise awareness about the high treatability of this condition.
He emphasised that the disease is manageable if identified promptly, stating: “The survival rate for prostate cancer is above 95 percent if diagnosed in time. It can be easily detected and screened via blood tests.”
Detection typically involves clinical examinations and Prostate-Specific Antigen testing. For those over the age of 50, monitoring urinary health is vital.
Dr Chawla noted that persistent changes should prompt a consultation with a urologist, explaining: “With clinical examination and PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing, as well as with MRI and ultrasonography, if required, prostate cancer can be easily detected.”
Five signs of prostate cancer
Medical professionals advise patients to watch for specific physical indicators that may suggest a growing tumour:
- Reduced flow of urine
- Obstruction and strain while passing urine
- Presence of blood in urine or hematuria
- Loss of control or urinary urgency
- Increased frequency of urination, especially at night
Risk factors for prostate cancer
Statistics show that 60 per cent of cases occur in those over 65, though certain demographics face higher risks:
- Age: Risk increases significantly after 50.
- Race and ethnicity: Individuals with African ancestry have a higher risk, often being diagnosed before age 50.
- Family history: A history of the disease doubles or triples an individual's risk.
- Genetics: Links exist with Lynch syndrome or specific inherited gene mutations.
