Instagram develops AI tool to animate story slideshows

Instagram is reportedly refining a new artificial intelligence-powered tool designed to transform static Story slideshows into fluid, video-like presentations.

The feature, currently identified in the app’s interface as “AI Transition,” was first discovered by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi and has since been confirmed by several industry sources.

By using generative AI to bridge the visual gap between two or more still images, the tool creates new pixels that morph one photo smoothly into the next.

This development marks a significant strategic shift for the platform, moving beyond basic filters to offer advanced creative tools that were previously limited to high-end editing software or the Meta AI chatbot.

Beyond simple motion, the technology allows users to request specific AI-driven alterations during the transition process.

Early reports suggest that creators can prompt the system to change hair colours, insert sunset backgrounds, or even modify outfits as the images shift.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has acknowledged the move, noting that while AI makes content production faster and more accessible, these specific tools are intended to ensure the final output remains refined and professional.

By enabling users to produce engaging video content from a handful of stills, the platform aims to lower the barrier for high-quality storytelling.

The "AI Transition" feature is expected to appear as a new option within the Instagram Stories gallery alongside the existing “Separate” mode.

While it is currently being tested by a select group of users, a full public release date has yet to be officially announced.

As the global race for AI-integrated social features intensifies, this tool represents Meta’s latest effort to keep its core audience engaged through automated creativity.
