Expert explains how shifting mindset to weight management ensures long term results

Fitness journeys often begin with a singular focus on losing weight, yet results frequently fade once initial goals are achieved.

Raj Ganpath, a Chennai-based fitness trainer and founder of the Slow Burn Method, shared essential tips in an Instagram video on Monday.

He emphasised that sustainable change requires a shift in mindset. Raj explains, “Whatever changes you're making right now, that diet, that program – ask yourself this question: Is this something I can do for the next three months or for the next three years?” If a routine is only manageable for three months, weight regain is highly probable.

Minimal effort difference between weight loss and maintenance

A common misconception is that effort can significantly decrease once a target weight is reached. However, keeping weight off requires the same steady consistency in nutrition, sleep, and stress management.

The fitness coach explains, “Most people put in a lot of work when they're trying to lose weight... But once they lose the weight, they drop the effort.”

He compares fitness to a career, noting, “If you stop going to work, you will stop getting paid. So, even after you lose the weight, you have to stay consistent with your efforts.”

Adopt the weight management approach

To ensure permanent success, individuals should transition from a "weight loss" perspective to one of "weight management."

This broader view encompasses losing, maintaining, and adjusting through different life stages. Raj explains, “Stop thinking ‘weight loss’ and start thinking ‘weight management’ because that's exactly what you're doing.”

By managing habits rather than just chasing a number, people can track the right metrics and stay on track for decades.
