OpenAI experiences latest executive restructuring

OpenAI is reorganising its leadership team. On Friday, OpenAI informed Business Insider that its longstanding chief operating officer, Brad Lightcap, is transitioning to a new position focused on unique initiatives.

As stated in an internal memo initially released by Bloomberg and later confirmed by OpenAI, Lightcap will directly report to CEO Sam Altman, aiding in expanding OpenAI's enterprise software sales through alliances with private equity groups.

Denise Dresser, recently appointed as the chief revenue officer, will assume some of Lightcap's duties as COO.

OpenAI also verified that two high-ranking executives are reducing their duties because of health concerns.

The internal memo indicated that Fidji Simo, currently the CEO of Applications, is on temporary medical leave to receive treatment for a neuroimmune condition and is anticipated to come back in a few weeks.

Chief marketing officer Kate Rouch shared on X on Friday her decision to step down to concentrate on her cancer recovery, mentioning the possibility of "returning in a different role" if her health permits.

"Courage isn't always about pushing through," Rouch expressed. "Sometimes, it's about prioritising your health, your family, and ensuring a future presence."

Executive turnover is not uncommon at OpenAI. Altman was briefly removed in late 2023, following which the company saw many significant departures, primarily of original board members who had removed Altman.

In 2025, several AI researchers from OpenAI joined Meta’s Superintelligence Labs.

"We have a robust leadership team concentrated on our major priorities: progressing frontier research, expanding our worldwide user base of nearly 1 billion, and energising enterprise applications," an OpenAI representative shared with Business Insider. "We're in a strong position to continue executing with stability and drive."

OpenAI is navigating a crucial phase. The company is getting ready for a possible IPO and has recently secured $122 billion, placing its valuation at $852 billion.

It is also exploring new revenue opportunities, such as experimenting with advertising in ChatGPT, while fending off rising competition from rivals such as Anthropic.
