Expert reveals common white ingredients acting as barriers to wellness

Maintaining excellent health is often the result of small, consistent daily habits rather than extreme sacrifices.

Dr Alok Chopra, a consultant cardiologist and founder-director of Aashlok Hospital in Delhi, suggests that the best place to begin this journey is the kitchen.

On Monday, the cardiologist, who has over 40 years of experience, shared an Instagram post identifying five common ingredients that hinder physical well-being.

"Your body deserves clean, wholesome food," Dr Chopra wrote, adding, "Because what you cook is what you become." He advocates for replacing processed items with nutrient-dense alternatives.

Dr Chopra’s Kitchen Swaps

The cardiologist noted that white sugar is "refined, addictive and inflammatory," adding, "It spikes insulin and feeds gut imbalance." He recommends substituting it with:

  • Jaggery
  • Raw honey
  • Dates
  • Coconut sugar

Regarding refined white flour, Dr Chopra warns it lacks fibre and nutrition. His suggested replacements include:

  • Millets
  • Whole wheat
  • Oats
  • Besan
  • Almond flour

For cooking fats, he warns that "white refined oils are chemically extracted and highly inflammatory." Instead, he recommends:

  • Cold-pressed mustard, groundnut, or coconut oil
  • Ghee
  • Extra virgin olive oil

Dr Chopra also advises switching from white polished rice to:

  • Hand-pounded, brown, red, or black rice
  • Millets

He further suggests rock salt or Himalayan pink salt over refined table salt, though iodine remains necessary. Summarising his philosophy, he noted:

"Remember this: the whiter the food, the more the nutrition has been stripped away. Change your kitchen and your health will follow."
