Ex-Instagram VP reveals 5 essential tips for aspiring software engineers
James Everingham shared key advice for aspiring engineers
The former VP of Instagram James Everingham has devoted over eight years to Meta, with previous experiences at Yahoo and Netscape, as stated on his LinkedIn account.
During "The Peterman Pod," he provided several suggestions for new engineers keen on building connections and rising in the software industry.
Curiosity plays a crucial role, specifically regarding colleagues' projects, he noted. He encouraged young minds to "pose numerous questions," dubbing it an "effective way to cultivate relationships within a company."
Mentorship was another topic of discussion. In his early professional stages, Everingham sought "reliable mentors," he shared. Finding such guidance isn't simple — and he recounted tips he heard from Looker's co-founder Lloyd Tabb.
"If you're seeking a mentor, don't directly approach someone saying: 'I need a mentor,'" Everingham advised. "Instead, offer your assistance."
During the start of his career, Everingham was with Netscape and Borland. The engineers from those early days are now influential figures in the Valley, he indicated, providing the example of Marc Andreessen.
"Those were my best mentorships and learning experiences," he added.
Having strong ties is beneficial — but steering clear of damaging connections might be even more critical.
His next bit of counsel: Avoid burning bridges. "Friends might drift apart, but adversaries accumulate," he observed.
Finally, it's your responsibility to leave an impactful impression. Everingham recollected his fear of expressing himself, worrying people might perceive him as "foolish." Now, he acknowledges the ones who aren't afraid to voice their thoughts.
"Even if their comment is off-base, their courage shines through," he mentioned. "So, express yourself."
