Eric Swalwell faces rape accusations as California gubernatorial campaign implodes

The California gubernatorial race has been plunged into turmoil following serious allegations of sexual misconduct and rape against Congressman Eric Swalwell.

On Friday, reports from CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle detailed accusations from four women, including a former staffer who alleges Swalwell raped her in 2024.

The staffer further claims she was subjected to non-consensual sex in 2019 while employed in his office. Swalwell, 45, has issued a forceful denial, stating: "These allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the frontrunner for governor."

The political fallout was immediate and severe. Influential figures, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senators Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, have called for the Congressman to exit the race.

"I am withdrawing my endorsement immediately, and believe that he should withdraw," Senator Schiff declared.

The campaign suffered further blows as Chair Jimmy Gomez resigned and the California Teachers Association (CTA) unanimously voted to rescind its endorsement. "I cannot in good conscience remain in any role with this campaign," Gomez stated on Saturday.

Despite the gravity of the claims, Swalwell maintains he will defend his "decades of service against these lies" and remains focused on his family.

The accusations have shifted the dynamics of the June primary, where Swalwell had held a narrow lead. Rivals such as San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan have called for strict accountability, while Governor Gavin Newsom described the revelations as "deeply troubling."

As the state prepares to elect a successor to Newsom, the focus remains on whether Swalwell can sustain a viable candidacy amidst the loss of his most critical political and financial backers.
