Eve Plumb reveals she never knew 'Brady Bunch' dad Robert Reed was gay

Eve Plumb, who portrayed the middle daughter Jan Brady on The Brady Bunch, revealed she wasn't aware her TV father, Robert Reed, was gay — not even as she grew older and became an adult.

Plumb, now 67, discussed her experiences on the show, which aired five seasons on ABC from 1969 to 1974, while promoting her upcoming book, Happiness Included: Jan Brady and Beyond, with Page Six.

The former child star said she learned later on that Reed, who played patriarch Mike Brady in the iconic series, had his sexuality hidden until after his passing.

“It was not something obvious, even later,” Plumb remarked.

Reed succumbed to colon lymphoma in 1992 at the age of 59. According to his public death certificate, HIV was also listed among contributing factors.

Plumb mentioned to Page Six that how Reed’s death was covered at the time remains unsettling to her.

“What was tragic was how it was sensationalized in the media,” she said, adding that Reed "belonged to a community that had to conceal [their identity] and continue hiding who they were, facing blame for having a condition beyond their control.”

“To accuse someone of such was absurd,” Plumb continued.

Plumb elaborated that she held a great respect for her older colleagues — which also included Florence Henderson as Carol Brady and Ann B. Davis as housekeeper Alice — while they all worked on The Brady Bunch.

“They were extremely professional,” Plumb commented. “Florence always kept things lively with her humor, while Bob ensured we took the time to make scenes feel more genuine."

She added, "Ann was instrumental in teaching us about the filming process and understanding how the cameras operated.”

Henderson, who died in 2016 at 82, spoke about Reed’s personal challenges with his sexuality during an ABC News interview in 2000.

“He appeared as the ideal father in this charming on-screen family, a perfect partner. Offscreen, however, he was quite unhappy,” Henderson recounted. “I believe if Bob hadn’t needed to live this dual existence, it might have eased a lot of his anger and frustration.”

Henderson added she was aware Reed “struggled under the burden of secrecy,” and expressed she thought it “could have ended his career back in those times.”
