WhatsApp introduces status updates from unsaved contacts

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that allows users to view status updates from phone numbers not saved in their contacts, marking a subtle but notable shift in how people interact on the platform.

The update, first reported by WABetaInfo, is currently available to select beta testers and is expected to expand to more users in the coming days.

It is designed to improve connectivity by showing status updates from individuals with whom users have recently interacted, even if those contacts are not saved in their address book.

Under this feature, users may notice a tilde (~) symbol appearing before a phone number in the status section.

This indicator signifies that the update is coming from a recent interaction—such as a chat or call—with someone whose number is not stored on the device.

Despite the expanded visibility, WhatsApp has emphasized that its privacy controls remain unchanged.

Users will still have full authority over who can view their status updates through existing privacy settings.

The feature only enables visibility when there has been recent communication between two users and when one party has the other’s number saved.

To help users understand the change, WhatsApp may display an informational prompt explaining why they are seeing updates from unfamiliar numbers. This ensures transparency and avoids confusion about how the feature works.

The rollout appears to have been introduced quietly, without an official in-app announcement.

However, it reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience by making it easier to stay connected with recent contacts while maintaining its core focus on privacy and control.
