Sam Levinson addresses controversial Cassie Howard storyline in 'Euphoria'
Sam Levinson discusses layering absurdity into controversial season three moments
- Sam Levinson defended a polarizing scene featuring Cassie Howard in a dog house.
- The creator aimed for absurdity to break the character's internal fantasy and illusion.
- The production team used a specific mid-century home to enhance the scene's strange tone.
Sam Levinson, the creator of the hit series Euphoria, has responded to public criticism regarding a controversial storyline involving Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie Howard.
Addressing the backlash in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Levinson explained the creative motivation behind a particularly polarising scene in which Cassie appears in a dog house, complete with dog ears and a nose.
"[Cassie] has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor, but what makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it," Levinson stated.
The director noted that the intention was to find a specific "layer of absurdity" to ensure the show does not stay "too inside of her fantasy or illusion."
He added, "What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion — the gag is to jump out, to break the wall."
This creative direction follows significant negative feedback from viewers who found the character's development in the third season problematic.
Marcell Rév, the show’s director of photography, also commented on the visual choices supporting these scenes. Instead of a modern setting, the team selected a "tacky" mid-century home.
"It’s probably a strange choice, but also it gives us possibilities," he noted. While Euphoria has long been known for its stylised approach to trauma, these recent developments have sparked intense debate regarding the show's future.
