A former California fire captain has been sentenced to multiple life terms following the August 2025 murders of his fiancée and her young son.

The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office confirmed that Darin McFarlin, 47, will serve two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

The horrific incident occurred on 21 August 2025, after an argument erupted over the portrayal of a firefighter in the film Fireproof.

McFarlin, a long-serving captain at Cal Fire, became incensed by the movie's depiction and strangled his fiancée, Marissa Divodi-Lessa Herzog, 29, during the subsequent dispute.

When Divodi-Lessa Herzog threatened to report the domestic violence, McFarlin retrieved a loaded firearm. Prosecutors stated that "knowing his career would be over if the incident were reported," he followed her into the dining area and shot her in the head.

He then turned the weapon on her seven-year-old son, killing him instantly. Divodi-Lessa Herzog’s nine-year-old daughter was also present and begged for mercy; she miraculously escaped through a dog door while McFarlin fled the scene. He was later apprehended in Mono County.

During the sentencing on Monday, 13 April 2026, District Attorney Vern Pierson described the killings as a "senseless act of violence."

McFarlin expressed remorse in court, particularly towards the surviving girl. Before his dismissal and arrest, McFarlin had been employed by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection since 2000. He now faces the remainder of his life in prison for the calculated destruction of his family.
