Royal family unveils scale model for new Queen Elizabeth II tribute

King Charles and Queen Camilla have visited the British Museum to view the final designs for a national memorial dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The monument, set to be situated in London's St James's Park, will feature statues of the late monarch alongside her husband, Prince Philip.

The Royal Family released a video of the visit with a statement confirming that the King and Queen were joined by other members of the family to view a scale model of the project. This commemorative site is intended to overlook The Mall in central London.

During the visit, Their Majesties met with the memorial’s designer, Lord Norman Foster, as well as the three artists currently producing work for the historic site.

The design is reportedly inspired by the celebrated 1955 portrait of the Queen, painted by the Italian artist Pietro Annigoni when she was twenty-eight years old.

The scale model will remain on public display at the British Museum for visitors to view. The visiting party included the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, though the Prince and Princess of Wales were not present.

Earlier in the day, King Charles paid a tender tribute to his mother on what would have been her 100th birthday. He remarked that his "darling Mama" would "remain forever in our hearts and prayers."

The Queen, who reigned for seventy years, passed away in September 2022. This new memorial serves as a permanent architectural tribute to her long-standing service and her partnership with the late Duke of Edinburgh.
