Huawei announces ten billion dollar investment in smart driving technology

Huawei has announced a monumental investment strategy to solidify its position within the global automobile industry, committing over $10 billion to smart-driving research and development over the next five years.

Senior Vice President Jin Yuzhi revealed the plans on Thursday, during an event in Beijing. For the current year alone, the Chinese technology giant will invest 18 billion yuan ($2.6 billion) into smart-driving initiatives, with 10 billion yuan specifically dedicated to enhancing the computing power required for advanced AI training.

The company is currently defending its leadership as a critical supplier in the smart electric vehicle sector.

At the Beijing event, Huawei showcased thirty-eight vehicle models equipped with its proprietary intelligent cockpit and driving technologies, including collaborations with major brands such as Audi and Toyota.

"More Chinese car owners are replacing their German premium cars with domestic brands," noted Yale Zhang, managing director of Automotive Foresight, highlighting how technologies from brands like Aito have begun to outpace legacy competitors like BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the luxury segment.

Huawei also unveiled its new Qiankun ADS advanced driver-assistance system, which is set to debut in the Epicland X9 six-seater SUV.

While automotive sales currently represent a smaller portion of Huawei’s diverse portfolio—which includes telecommunications and smartphones—it has emerged as the company's fastest-growing segment.

In 2025, automotive-related revenue jumped by 72% to 45 billion yuan, significantly contributing to the firm's overall annual revenue of 880.9 billion yuan.

Huawei plans to continue its expansion into international automotive markets throughout the coming decade.
