Deadly shooting at Endeavor Swedish hospital leaves officer killed
Authorities say a suspect is in custody after a hospital shooting left one officer dead
A Chicago police officer was killed and another critically wounded after a shooting erupted inside a hospital during a prisoner transport, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 25, at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, where officers from the Chicago Police Department were escorting an individual for medical observation before transferring them to jail on a separate offense.
According to officials, gunfire broke out around 10:45 a.m. local time, leaving two officers shot.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the fallen officer as John Bartholomew, 38.
A second officer, a 57-year-old veteran with more than two decades of service, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
“One was shot critically and was pronounced,” said Larry Snelling during a press briefing. “The second officer right now is fighting for his life… We ask that you keep the families of these officers in your prayers.”
Authorities confirmed that a suspect is in custody and a weapon has been recovered. The investigation remains ongoing.
In a statement, hospital officials said the individual had undergone standard security screening upon arrival and was under law enforcement supervision at all times.
Despite these measures, the suspect allegedly opened fire on the officers before fleeing the building.
Law enforcement launched a manhunt following the shooting, eventually locating and apprehending the suspect near the hospital around midday.
The hospital was placed on lockdown during the incident, which was lifted later in the afternoon.
Officials confirmed that no patients or staff members were physically harmed.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson described the shooting as “a real difficult moment” for the city, emphasizing the risks officers face daily.
“Our officers stand in the way of harm every single day,” he said. “They have family that expect them to come home. One of our officers will not be able to return to their family.”
The shooting has sent shockwaves through the community as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
