Samsung withdraws television and appliance sales from Chinese market

Samsung Electronics is reportedly preparing to withdraw its home appliance and television sales from the Chinese market within the current year.

According to a report published by the Nikkei newspaper on Monday, the South Korean multinational aims to reach a final decision regarding this strategic exit as early as the end of April.

This potential move signals a significant shift for the world’s leading electronics manufacturer as it navigates an increasingly challenging competitive landscape within the world's second-largest economy.

The primary driver behind this anticipated withdrawal is a marked decline in price competitiveness against local rivals.

Industry analysts noted that Chinese manufacturers have not only maintained lower product prices but have also significantly improved quality, thereby strengthening their presence both domestically and in global markets.

In response to these pressures, Samsung is expected to pivot its strategy. While retail sales may cease, the firm intends to retain its local production facilities for appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners, repurposing them as supply hubs for overseas markets.

In a formal statement addressing the reports, Samsung Electronics noted that it "regularly reviews its global business structure in line with changes in the operating environment."

However, the company clarified that "nothing has been decided" regarding the specific speculation surrounding a restructuring of its Chinese operations.

This development follows years of fluctuating market share for the brand in the region. Previously, Samsung closed its last smartphone factory in China in 2019, shifting much of its mobile production to Vietnam and India to maintain its global leadership position.
