Austrian to admit guilt in Taylor Swift concert terror plot

The trial for a man accused of supporting ISIS and planning an attack on one of pop sensation Taylor Swift's concerts in Vienna nearly two years back has started in Austria.

The attack was prevented, but Austrian officials still canceled Swift's three performances scheduled for August 2024.

Swift's devoted fans, often referred to as Swifties, who had traveled from all over the world to witness a performance from her record-breaking Eras Tour, were heartbroken.

Nevertheless, they united, transforming Vienna into a vibrant hub for exchanging friendship bracelets and group singalongs.

The accused, a 21-year-old Austrian identified as Beran A. due to privacy laws, is facing charges, including terrorist activities and joining a terrorist faction. He could face a sentence of up to 20 years in jail.

He stands trial alongside Arda K., whose full name hasn't been disclosed. The pair, along with another man, allegedly schemed to conduct coordinated attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024 on behalf of ISIS. Neither Beran A. nor Arda K. executed their attacks.

Beran A.'s lawyer, Anna Mair, mentioned to The Associated Press on Monday that her client intends to admit to most charges, yet didn't clarify which ones. Only Beran A. is implicated in the Taylor Swift conspiracy.

It's claimed he aimed to target the spectators gathered outside Ernst Happel Stadium – as many as 30,000 per evening, with an additional 65,000 inside – using knives or improvised explosives. The suspect aspired to "cause maximum casualties," as reported by authorities in 2024. U.S. intelligence was instrumental in the arrests made.

They intended to take numerous lives — potentially tens of thousands at this event, including likely many Americans — and had progressed quite far in their plans," stated CIA Deputy Director David Cohen a few weeks after the arrests.

"The Austrian authorities were able to detain these suspects thanks to crucial information shared by the agency and our partners within the intelligence community regarding the intentions of this ISIS-affiliated group."

It's alleged that Beran A. coordinated with other ISIS associates prior to the planned assault. Prosecutors claim they discussed acquiring firearms and assembling explosives, and that the defendant attempted to illegally purchase weapons in the days leading up to the event. Additionally, he professed loyalty to the militant faction.

Authorities searched his residence on August 7, 2024, and discovered bomb-making components. The shows were set to commence the following day.

Swift reportedly learned about the bomb plot while on a flight to Austria, as documented in her Eras Tour film.

The trial is conducted in Wiener Neustadt, located roughly an hour south of Vienna. The hearings are slated to proceed on May 12.
