Robotics industry recruiters prioritise autonomous vehicle experience for new hires
Tony Zhao leads a startup where up to half of the employees are AV alums
The robotics industry is increasingly looking to the autonomous vehicle (AV) sector to find skilled talent capable of transitioning complex artificial intelligence into the physical world.
Founders and chief executives within the field have noted that experience in deploying self-driving cars provides an ideal foundation for modern robotics.
Adrian Macneil, co-founder and CEO of Foxglove, told Business Insider that "we definitely look for AV experience," citing that the sector was the "first big application of physical AI."
Macneil, a former employee of General Motors’ robotaxi venture, Cruise, revealed that approximately 40% of his 75-strong workforce originates from AV or AV-adjacent companies.
This sentiment is echoed by Tony Zhao, CEO of Sunday Robotics, who oversees a team where between 30% and 50% of staff possess similar backgrounds, including experience at Tesla.
Zhao explained that the "systems-level thinking" required to turn noisy, real-world data into reliable physical action is a specific skill set refined within the autonomous driving pipeline.
The transferability of these skills was the focal point of a recent "Physical AI Industry Night" in San Francisco, which attracted over 200 professionals from 110 robotics firms.
Panellists from companies such as Bedrock Robotics and Mind Robotics—many of whom are Waymo or Zoox alumni—discussed how the robotics field is currently mirroring the maturity curve seen in autonomous vehicles since 2014.
These experts suggest that the ability to manage massive operations and validate safety protocols makes AV veterans uniquely qualified to lead the next generation of industrial and home robotics, as firms race to move beyond closed demonstrations into real-world applications.
