Reddit reports 30 per cent surge in weekly search users during Q1

Reddit has successfully reversed years of criticism regarding its search functionality, reporting a 30 per cent year-on-year growth in weekly search users for the first quarter of 2026.

Speaking during a post-results conference call on Thursday, CEO Steve Huffman attributed this success to intensive investment in artificial intelligence.

He specifically highlighted "Reddit Answers," the platform's AI-powered search feature, as a primary driver for user retention.

Huffman told analysts that "Search DAUs, WAUs, and queries are up meaningfully year-over-year," noting that the search team is "quite frankly doing a great job."

The platform is also leveraging these technical improvements for monetisation. Since February, Reddit has been testing product placements within AI search results in the United States.

Huffman noted that 40 per cent of site discussions are business-oriented, with 84 per cent of consumers claiming the platform assists in better purchasing decisions.

This strategic shift contributed to a Q1 revenue of $663 million, comfortably exceeding Wall Street's $609.8 million estimate.

Interestingly, the company disclosed capital expenditures of just $1 million, a stark contrast to the billions spent by AI infrastructure competitors.

Beyond search, Reddit’s new machine translation system, supporting over 30 languages, has fueled significant international expansion.

International daily active users rose by 26 per cent to 73.3 million, outperforming domestic US growth. These initiatives are central to the company’s long-term objective of reaching one billion daily active users globally.

Following this robust quarterly performance, Reddit remains focused on refining its AI tools to bridge the gap between community discussion and commercial utility.
