Prince William pays tribute to Leigh Halfpenny after rugby star announces retirement
Halfpenny will retire at the end of the current season after a career spanning nearly two decades
Prince William has shared a rare personal tribute following the retirement announcement of Welsh rugby star Leigh Halfpenny, celebrating the athlete’s long-standing contribution to the sport.
The Prince of Wales, 43, posted the message on Thursday, May 7, via the official account of The Prince and Princess of Wales on X, after Halfpenny, 37, confirmed he will step away from professional rugby at the end of the current season.
Halfpenny, who made his professional debut in 2008, has enjoyed a decorated career representing Wales and the British & Irish Lions.
“Congratulations to Leigh Halfpenny on an outstanding career representing Wales and the British & Irish Lions,” William wrote.
“A player who embodied courage, professionalism and humility throughout every chapter of the game. Your dedication to Welsh rugby has inspired so many, and your achievements will long be remembered. Wishing you all the best for the future.”
The message was signed with William’s initial, “W,” and reflects his long-standing connection to Welsh rugby.
The royal has served as patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016, a role that has seen him frequently attend major fixtures and publicly support the national team.
Halfpenny’s announcement marks the end of a career that has made him one of Wales’ most recognisable modern players.
He previously confirmed his international retirement in 2023 before later announcing his decision to retire from all Welsh rugby.
William has often shown public enthusiasm for the sport, including attending Wales’ Six Nations match against Italy in Cardiff earlier this year, where he was seen cheering and even singing in Welsh from the stands at Principality Stadium.
Rugby also forms part of a friendly sporting divide within the royal household, as Catherine, Princess of Wales, serves as patron of the Rugby Football Union in England.
She took on the role in 2022, previously held by Prince Harry before he stepped back from royal duties.
William has used his official social media presence on several occasions to mark major sporting moments, including tributes to rugby league legend Rob Burrow and celebrations of standout football performances.
More recently, the Prince and Princess of Wales also shared a joint message supporting teams competing in the Women’s Six Nations, underscoring their continued engagement with the sport.
