Instagram removes millions of inauthentic accounts in sudden influencer crackdown

The landscape of digital influence was dramatically reshaped on Thursday as Instagram executed a sweeping purge of inauthentic accounts, causing some of the world’s most followed individuals to lose millions of fans instantly.

In a move that stripped away a decade of exaggerated metrics, Meta deployed a sophisticated new AI-based detection system to eliminate bots, dormant profiles, and paid followers.

Within a mere six-hour window, the platform removed the "false facade" that many creators and businesses have long relied upon to signal cultural significance and market dominance.

The impact was felt most acutely by mega-accounts, where the volume of bot infiltration was highest. Reality star Kylie Jenner awoke to find fifteen million followers missing, while the musical group BLACKPINK saw a reduction of ten million.

Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo was also affected, losing eight million followers. In contrast, smaller accounts generally experienced more modest decreases of between 2% and 5%.

Meta officials clarified that the crackdown targeted "coordinated inauthentic behaviours," while noting that accounts deemed "active" were entirely exempt from the purge.

This sudden correction has sent ripples through the marketing industry, as artificial follower counts often dictate the lucrative endorsement rates celebrities can command.

With the perception of reach now significantly altered, influencers are being forced to re-evaluate their service fees and transparency standards.

Moving forward, Instagram intends to refine these detection tools to ensure engagement remains genuine, while affected creators must now work to rebuild their audiences through authentic interaction and high-quality content.
