All Rights Entertainment secures major global distribution for 'Ip Man: Kung Fu Legend' ahead of its Cannes debut.
According to Variety, the martial arts sequel has achieved significant international sales. The deals were locked in before its official showcase at the Cannes Film Market. Well Go USA has acquired the North American rights. The company is planning a wide theatrical release for July 14.
Key European sales include German-speaking territories with Splendid Film. Meanwhile, Plaion Pictures will handle distribution in Italy and the U.K.
Distribution is also set for Latin America with A2 Distribuidora de Filmes. Phars Filmco will cover the Middle East and North Africa.
Other territories include Turkey with Chantier Films and Indonesia with Cinema 21. Negotiations are reportedly nearing completion for France.
The project marks director Li Liming's return after helming the previous instalment. Dennis To reprises his role as the Wing Chun grandmaster.
For those unversed, Ip Man was the real-life teacher of Bruce Lee. To has portrayed the character in several films, including "Ip Man: The Legend Is Born".
To reportedly trained under Ip Man's own son. This adds a layer of authenticity to his acclaimed on-screen performance.
The new film is set in 1950s Hong Kong. Ip Man confronts British merchants and triads who are demolishing local factories.
The supporting cast features several familiar faces. Zhou Xiaofei appeared in Wong Kar Wai's "The Grandmaster"and "Ip Man 4: The Finale". Steven Dasz, from "Chinese Zodiac" and "Man of Tai Chi", also stars. Zhang Tingfei of "Coming Home" rounds out the ensemble.
The "Ip Man" name was popularised by the Donnie Yen franchise. It became one of the most iconic martial arts series of the 21st century.
That original saga, launched in 2008, blended stylised action with historical drama. It traced the master's journey through major historical events.
With four main films and multiple spinoffs, the franchise has earned both critical acclaim and global box office success.
The spinoff films starring To are said to carve a more traditionalist path. They spotlight a younger, humbler version of the master.
Market screenings for the newly completed English version are scheduled. They will take place during the Cannes market on May 13 and 14.
