Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney reflect on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Season 5 and community trust

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have shared new details about Season 5 of the hit FX docuseries Welcome to Wrexham, emphasising that earning the trust of the local community remains at the heart of the show.

The series, which premiered in 2022, follows the Hollywood stars’ ownership of Wrexham A.F.C. after they purchased the club in 2021. Since then, Wrexham has enjoyed a remarkable rise through the English football pyramid and now sits just one step away from the Premier League.

Speaking to Variety, Reynolds said one of his proudest achievements has been gaining the trust of Wrexham residents.

“One thing I’m really proud of is that we’ve earned the trust of the community over time,” Reynolds said. “It’s something we don’t take lightly.”

FX recently renewed the Emmy-winning series for three more seasons, ensuring the story will continue through at least Season 8.

Season 5 will chronicle Wrexham’s 2025–26 campaign in the EFL Championship, while also highlighting major developments around the club, including the women’s team’s league-winning season, the expansion of the Kop stand, and tributes to club legend Joey Jones.

The upcoming season will open with the story of Bailey Jones, a devoted Wrexham supporter who died in 2023. McElhenney said the episode was handled with care and in close collaboration with Bailey’s family.

“We always make sure the family sees the episode beforehand,” he said. “The goal is to celebrate these stories, not exploit them.”

Reynolds and McElhenney also reiterated that they stay out of football matters and trust manager Phil Parkinson to make all sporting decisions.

“We don’t meddle in football decisions,” Reynolds said. “Our role is to support the people who know what they’re doing.”

The owners confirmed that Wrexham Women’s title-winning campaign will receive significant attention in the new season, with Reynolds praising the growing global interest in women’s sports.

As Wrexham continues its push toward the Premier League, both owners acknowledged that player departures remain one of the most emotional parts of running the club.

Season 5 of “Welcome to Wrexham” will document the next chapter in the club’s extraordinary rise while continuing to focus on the stories of the people who have made Wrexham’s journey so compelling.
