Angela Bassett reveals the unexpected line fans still quote to her the most

Angela Bassett revealed the one iconic line from her decades-long career that fans still quote back to her most often, and it comes from a role many viewers might not expect.

Speaking with People at the 2026 Disney Upfront in New York City on May 12, the Emmy-winning actress said the most frequently repeated line she hears in public is not from her Oscar-nominated portrayal of Tina Turner or her role as Queen Ramonda in Marvel’s Black Panther films.

Instead, it’s a moment from the 1992 television miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream.

“You may hear, ‘Go to bed, Joseph! Go to bed!’” Bassett recalled, referencing her character Katherine Jackson’s heated exchange with husband Joe Jackson in the biographical drama about the legendary Jackson family.

Bassett said she is always amused by how audiences continue to connect with lines from across her 40-year career.

“Yeah, so you hear different little lines, but I always enjoy that,” she added.

In The Jacksons: An American Dream, Bassett portrayed Katherine Jackson, the matriarch of the Jackson family, alongside Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, who played Joe Jackson.

Beyond reflecting on her enduring fan-favorite line, Bassett also used the Disney Upfront stage to promote the upcoming 13th season of American Horror Story, where she will reprise her role as voodoo queen Marie Laveau.

The star-studded presentation featured appearances from returning cast members, including Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts and Evan Peters.

Season 13 of American Horror Story is set to premiere in September on FX and Hulu, continuing Bassett’s long-running collaboration with the anthology franchise.

Now in her 40th year in film and television, Bassett remains one of Hollywood’s most celebrated performers and still, it seems, fans can’t resist calling back one very specific line from her early career.
