John Cena reveals painful reason behind WWE retirement decision

John Cena has revealed the painful reality that convinced him to finally walk away from WWE, admitting that declining physical performance and the demands of age made retirement unavoidable.

The 17-time world champion officially stepped away from in-ring competition following his match against GUNTHER at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025.

While speaking with Sports Illustrated, Cena said years of closely tracking his athletic performance ultimately forced him to accept that his legendary wrestling career had reached its limit.

The 49-year-old explained that he meticulously monitored his strength, recovery, conditioning, and even vertical jump measurements throughout his career.

However, despite maintaining strict training habits and proper nutrition, the numbers began to steadily decline.

“As much as I love passion, I also love data,” Cena said, explaining that he could no longer ignore the physical changes that came with age.

According to the WWE icon, retirement first entered his mind when he turned 45, though accepting the decision emotionally proved far more difficult than expected.

“The game just looks too fast for me, because it is,” he admitted, adding that altering his wrestling style would not have felt fair to WWE fans or the company itself.

Although Cena has retired from active competition, he continues to remain involved in the wrestling industry.

The Peacemaker star recently hosted WrestleMania 42 and announced plans to launch the John Cena Classic, a tournament designed to help spotlight emerging WWE talent.
