Shakira calls breakup with Gerard Piqué the 'darkest moment' of her life
The singer reflected on how emotional pain ultimately made her stronger and more resilient
Shakira has opened up about the emotional toll of her separation from former footballer Gerard Piqué, describing the breakup as one of the darkest periods of her life.
Speaking in an interview with The Times of London, the Grammy-winning artist said the end of their relationship marked the “dissolution of [their] family,” a moment that left a lasting impact on her personally and emotionally.
The couple, who were together from 2010 to 2022, share two sons, Milan and Sasha.
Shakira said the experience brought significant pain but ultimately reshaped her outlook on life and strengthened her resilience.
“I saw the dissolution of my family, the family that I had dreamt to keep forever,” she said. “I’ve been through so much pain, but it has made me perhaps in an unforeseen way a wiser person — or stronger, at least.”
She added that difficult experiences have taught her about emotional endurance and personal growth.
“They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and it is true,” she said. “It’s amazing to learn that humans have a resilience that we can resort to at any moment in our lives.”
The Hips Don’t Lie singer also reflected on how suffering has shifted her perspective, particularly in valuing support systems and personal relationships.
“Sometimes through hardships and through pain is how we discover how strong we can be,” she said. “Suffering sometimes makes you a better person, makes you value friends and support.”
Despite public curiosity about her personal life, Shakira said she is not currently focused on romance and is prioritizing her children and career.
“Oh no, no romance for me for now,” she said. “There’s no space or time in my life for that. My kids are my priority, and my career.”
She added that she is currently deeply focused on her work and enjoying her independence.
“Strangely enough, I’m in love with my career like I’ve never been in my life,” she said. “I’m enjoying my time alone as well.”
Following her split from Piqué, Shakira was briefly linked to NBA star Jimmy Butler and actor Lucien Laviscount, though she has not publicly confirmed any ongoing relationship.
