Lena Dunham recalls surprising and 'lovely' first reaction from husband Luis Felber
The couple met in 2021 and married later that same year after a fast-moving romance
Lena Dunham has opened up about the early days of her relationship with husband Luis Felber, revealing that his first impression of her was shaped by complete unfamiliarity with her fame — something she says she found unexpectedly refreshing.
Speaking during the final stop of her Famesick book tour in Los Angeles on May 20, the writer and filmmaker recalled that Felber had never seen her hit HBO series Girls when they first met.
“The thing that was so amazing about meeting him, he’d never seen Girls,” Dunham said, adding that this lack of prior knowledge played a meaningful role in how their relationship began.
Dunham, 40, said Felber initially assumed she was known for modelling rather than acting or writing, after someone reached out to him on Instagram ahead of their first meeting.
She described the misunderstanding as surprisingly endearing, calling it “the loveliest thing” she had ever heard.
According to Dunham, Felber approached their first interactions without preconceived ideas about her public image, instead focusing on getting to know her personally.
“He was present and interested but not too interested,” she said, noting that his attitude allowed their connection to develop naturally.
Dunham and Felber first met in 2021 after being set up on a blind date. Their relationship progressed quickly, and the couple moved in together within months before marrying later that same year in a private ceremony.
Reflecting on their marriage, Dunham spoke warmly about Felber’s personality and emotional grounding.
“I love to talk about him because he fills me with joy,” she said, describing him as kind, supportive, and emotionally steady.
She added that while she values his creativity and humour, it is his emotional intelligence and ability to understand others that she finds most important.
“All that other stuff, like him being funny and cute and cool and creative, is like the cherry on top,” she said. “He’s able to hold people’s complexity and still do everything in a way that’s very anchored in love.”
