Taylor Swift has once again shown why she is beloved by fans of all ages, surprising an eight-year-old girl with a signed guitar and a heartfelt handwritten note after a charming video of the child's paper airplane request went viral on TikTok.
A sweet idea born from shyness
The story began in April when Cleveland native Madeline, feeling too shy to approach her new neighbour directly, came up with an endearing solution.
After overhearing musician Ethan Hayes, 26, practising guitar outside, she asked her mother for paper, wrote a note requesting a Taylor Swift song, and sent it over the fence as a paper airplane.
Hayes picked up the note and promptly performed Swift's 2008 hit Love Story from his porch, whilst Madeline sang along from her window.
Madeline's mother, Natalie Hulec, captured the wholesome exchange on video and shared it to TikTok, where it quickly amassed almost four million views.
The clip featured the caption: "Our daughter sent a paper airplane to our new neighbor, and this happened…"
Swift's team comes calling
The video eventually reached Taylor Swift herself, who responded in typically generous fashion by sending signed guitars to both Madeline and Hayes, along with a personal handwritten note for the young fan.
"Dearest Madeline," Swift wrote. "I just wanted to let you know that it made me SO happy that you asked your neighbor to play my song for you.
"You brought the biggest smile to my face! I am sending you your own guitar, in case you ever want to learn too! Thanks again and sending you my love, Taylor."
Hayes revealed that Swift's team had contacted him directly after the video took off online. "They're like, 'Hey, Taylor saw your video. We want to send you something. Don't tell anyone until it gets there,'" he recalled.
"I was expecting maybe a signed poster or something. And then she sent us guitars, which is insane."
Madeline's response to receiving a gift from her favourite singer was brief but perfectly fitting. "Thank you," she said.
A neighbour who kept Love Story in his back pocket
Hayes admitted he initially panicked upon reading the paper airplane request, explaining that he is not "a die-hard Swiftie."
However, he was sufficiently familiar with Love Story to pull off the performance. "I'm a musician, so I get requests all the time. That's one I always usually keep in my back pocket," he said.
The scale of the response caught him entirely off guard. "My mom sent the clip to me," he recalled. "She's like, 'Is that you?' I was like, 'Yeah, that's me.'"
Natalie, meanwhile, described the entire family's reaction when they first heard Hayes playing outside.
"We had the windows open, we're making dinner and even Russell [my husband] shouted out a little 'Woo!'" she said, adding that Madeline's paper airplane idea felt like perhaps "the cutest idea" her daughter had ever had.
Swift's history of fan generosity
The gesture is entirely consistent with Swift's well-documented reputation for going above and beyond for her fans.
The singer has previously made headlines for tipping stadium workers during NFL appearances and distributing substantial bonuses to crew members throughout her record-breaking Eras Tour.
Away from fan surprises, Swift has also been keeping busy with her fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
The couple recently attended the Knicks vs. Cavaliers playoff game in Cleveland, where Kelce was captured on the jumbotron cheerfully chugging a beer courtside as Swift laughed and covered her face with her hand.
The pair, who first sparked dating rumours in 2023, have been spending time together in New York in recent weeks, amid reports they are preparing for a wedding on 3 July.
