New York woman charged with murder after stabbing sleeping man

A New York woman has been accused of fatally stabbing a man whilst he slept at his family home on Long Island.

Kristin Sculley, 22, of Massapequa, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 28-year-old Robert "Bobby" Carragher, as identified by his family, according to reports from Long Island News 12, ABC 7 New York, and CBS News.

What police say happened

At a press conference on Tuesday, Nassau County Police Detective Lt. George Darienzo said Carragher was stabbed in the neck at around 1:30 a.m. on Monday whilst asleep in bed.

"We believe the suspect in this case became angry towards our victim," Darienzo said, according to ABC 7.

He described Sculley as a friend whom Carragher had known "for several years," and said the two had travelled to the victim's family home together after spending time at a bar, as reported by CBS News and ABC 7.

'He died in his father's arms'

Following the stabbing, Carragher climbed the stairs and called out for help, drawing his parents to his side. Despite their efforts to assist him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"He died in his father's arms," Darienzo told reporters, per News 12, adding, "no family should ever have to bear witness to their son being killed in that manner."

Suspect found hiding in the home

Officers took Sculley into custody after locating her hiding inside the property, in possession of a pocketknife that investigators believe was the weapon used in the killing. She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment on Tuesday, 2 June, and remains in custody, according to ABC 7.

Friends pay tribute

Those who knew Carragher expressed their grief following news of his death. "There's not much you can say," his friend Louis Ambrosio told ABC 7. "An innocent life was taken. Bobby lit up every room he walked into."
