Sharon Stone reveals why her second marriage ended
Sharon Stone is widely known for her work in 'Basic Instinct'
Sharon Stone has opened up about the reason she chose to end her second marriage, linking it to her then-husband’s reaction during a frightening health scare.
Speaking on David Begnaud’s The Person Who Believed In Mepodcast, the Basic Instinct star recalled discovering she had breast tumors in the early 2000s.
“One of them was bigger than the size of my entire left breast,” she said. “And the doctor had come out to my house and said, ‘Look, we think you should have a bilateral mastectomy. This is really bad. And we usually, when they’re all the way up into here, we know before we go in that they’re cancer.’”
Standing Firm on Her Decision
Stone, now 68, explained that she was convinced her tumors were benign.
“I said, ‘I don’t have cancer,’” she shared. “And [the doctor] said, ‘You don’t get to decide that.’ And I said, ‘I do. I do get to decide that. I’m deciding.’”
Ultimately, she agreed to undergo surgery, saying, “because I’m not f–king around.”
But her then-husband did not support her choice.
“My husband said, ‘This is ridiculous,’” she recalled. “And got up and left the room.”
The Breaking Point
Podcast host Begnaud asked her what he found ridiculous.
She replied, “That I would have a bilateral [mastectomy]. He was furious.”
Stone clarified that his anger stemmed from the fact she would lose both breasts.
“And so the doctor said to him, ‘If I had more patients like her, we’d have more women alive today. You need to sit down.’ And I said, ‘I make the decisions, not you,’” she recounted.
Stone said that moment marked the end of their relationship.
“That was the end of the marriage. That was it. He was done with me then. It was over,” she claimed. “It was just over in the room. You could just tell. It was over. It was just over. He thought I was ridiculous. He thought it was foolish. He thought I was making too many decisions myself.”
Aftermath
Though she did not name her spouse, Stone was married to journalist Phil Bronstein from 1998 to 2004.
Her tumors were ultimately benign, and she did not undergo a double mastectomy. However, in 2021 she revealed that during surgery to remove the tumors, her doctor allegedly gave her larger breast implants without her consent.
