Maryland‑based anesthesiologist and pain medicine specialist Dr. Kunal Sood recently explained why this happens.

Caffeine isn’t actual energy

According to Dr. Sood, caffeine works by blocking adenosine — a brain chemical that builds sleep pressure the longer you stay awake. This trick makes the brain feel more alert, but it doesn’t erase the underlying sleep debt. If someone is already exhausted, the temporary mask eventually fades, and the body “crashes.”

Sugar spikes add to the fatigue

Most energy drinks are loaded with sugar. That surge in blood glucose is followed by an insulin response, which can cause a rapid drop and leave people feeling suddenly drained. Caffeine itself can also interfere with insulin sensitivity, especially if consumed on an empty stomach. Over time, the brain adapts to regular caffeine intake, dulling its stimulating effect.

What your body really needs

If an energy drink leaves you sleepy, the solution isn’t more caffeine. Dr. Sood notes that the body may be signaling a need for rest, proper nutrition, hydration, or a lower‑sugar option. He cautions that symptoms like palpitations, chest pain, fainting, severe shakiness, or persistent daytime sleepiness should be evaluated by a doctor.

Bottom line: Energy drinks can mask tiredness for a short while, but they don’t replace sleep or healthy habits. Sometimes, the best “energy boost” is simply rest.
