Four expert-backed summer intimate hygiene tips every woman needs to know now
Scented products disrupt pH levels and raise infection risk, says Pee Safe's research and development lead
Maintaining intimate hygiene is a vital but frequently neglected component of overall health. In summer, higher temperatures, elevated humidity levels and increased perspiration can disrupt the natural balance of the intimate area, leaving women more vulnerable to a range of infections. Establishing a simple, consistent routine built around cleanliness, breathability and hydration can help sustain comfort and ward off complications.
Ashima Sharma, research and development lead at Pee Safe, shared her top summer intimate hygiene tips with HT Lifestyle, offering practical guidance every woman can incorporate into her daily routine.
Tip 1: Gentle cleansing techniques
"Intimate areas are sensitive; hence, one should not scrub the region aggressively," highlighted Ashima.
Daily washing of the outer genital area with lukewarm water is recommended. Where additional cleansing is needed, a mild intimate wash may be used. Scented soaps and perfumed products ought to be avoided, as they interfere with natural pH levels and can lead to irritation. Once cleansed, the area should be patted dry gently with a clean towel.
Tip 2: Prioritise breathability and dryness
Selecting the right clothing is central to intimate hygiene, according to Ashima. Appropriate garments allow for adequate air circulation, keeping the area cool and dry. Tight-fitting or synthetic fabrics can trap moisture and significantly increase the likelihood of infections and irritation. Wet clothing — whether from swimming or physical activity — should be changed without delay.
Tip 3: Maintain daily hygiene habits
Consistent adherence to hygiene practices is crucial in keeping infections at bay. Wiping from front to back is important to minimise the transfer of bacteria. During menstruation, pads should be changed every four to six hours, particularly in warm weather. Supportive products such as intimate wipes, intimate powder, panty liners and anti-chafing sticks can also be beneficial in managing day-to-day comfort.
Tip 4: Promote intimate health from within
"Both hydration and nutrition play an essential part in intimate health," said Ashima.
She noted that drinking sufficient water helps the body flush out toxins and reduces the risk of urinary tract infections. Including nutritious fruits, vegetables and probiotic-rich foods in one's diet supports a healthy bacterial balance throughout the body.
Caring for intimate health during the summer does not demand elaborate steps — it simply calls for consistency and awareness. Prioritising breathable clothing, appropriate cleansing methods, sound hygiene practices and general wellbeing will equip women to navigate the warmer months with greater comfort and confidence.
