Emily Blunt rejected AI for alien voice in 'Disclosure Day' film

Emily Blunt rejected the use of artificial intelligence to create her alien character’s voice in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day, choosing instead to develop the sounds through self-recorded experimentation.

Speaking during the film’s press tour, Blunt said Spielberg offered her the option of using AI to refine the vocal effects.

“He said, ‘You know, we could do it with AI, or you could do it,’” she told Entertainment Tonight. “And I was like, ‘I feel confident I can make some weird noises.’”

Emily Blunt Created Alien Voice Without AI

Blunt said she developed the character’s vocalisations through extensive trial and error, recording a range of sounds at home before sending them to Spielberg for review.

She described combining clicks, humming and low vocal tones in an effort to build the alien language.

“Clicking, humming, doing weird Barry White sort of low singing mixed with clicking with Morse code sounds,” she said. “I just tried everything.”

The actress said the production ultimately layered multiple recordings to create the final sound used in the film. She added that Spielberg was aiming for a tone that felt structured rather than overtly frightening.

Debate Over AI Use in Film Continues

The film industry’s use of artificial intelligence has become a point of ongoing debate, with studios exploring the technology for efficiency while actors and unions raise concerns about job displacement and consent.

Blunt has previously expressed scepticism about AI in entertainment. In a 2025 interview with Variety, she criticised the emergence of AI-generated performers, calling the development “really, really scary.”

She also warned in a separate interview that AI represented a “very scary bubble to poke your head inside,” citing concerns over its impact on human creativity and connection.

Disclosure Day, which was released on Friday, also stars Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson.

Blunt’s comments add to broader industry discussion over how artificial intelligence should be used in film production, particularly in relation to performance and voice work.
