Divorce papers turn deadly as former mayor allegedly shoots wife inside law office
Police are investigating the death of Icicléia Alves Veloso as a femicide followed by suicide
A divorce meeting between a Brazilian businesswoman and her estranged husband turned deadly when the former mayor allegedly shot her before taking his own life.
Icicléia Alves Veloso, 41, died on June 4, one day after she was shot by her husband, Romilson Veloso e Silva, during a meeting at a law office in Ourilândia do Norte, in Brazil’s Pará state, according to local reports.
Romilson, 69, who previously served four terms as mayor of the city and was a councilman at the time of his death, was also found dead after allegedly shooting himself inside the same office.
Authorities are investigating the case as a suspected femicide followed by suicide.
The couple had reportedly been separated for about three months, and Romilson allegedly struggled to accept Icicléia’s decision to end their marriage.
The pair later met at the law office to finalize their divorce. According to reports, Romilson asked his lawyer to leave the room briefly so he and Icicléia could speak privately.
Shortly after the lawyer stepped away, gunshots were heard from inside the room.
Security footage reviewed by investigators reportedly showed Romilson approaching Icicléia from behind as she sat in a chair before shooting her.
Icicléia was found alive after the attack and was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Authorities said Romilson then went to a bathroom inside the office, where he fatally shot himself.
Icicléia was a successful businesswoman in Ourilândia do Norte and leaves behind three children, according to reports.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
