Tom Holland’s real-life 'Spider-Man' tattoo caused a surprise problem behind the scenes

Tom Holland’s love for Spider-Man followed him onto the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day — but his personal tribute to the superhero created an unexpected filming challenge.

The 30-year-old actor revealed that his Spider-Man emblem tattoo became a continuity issue during production after appearing in a scene where he plays Peter Parker hanging upside down as the Marvel superhero.

Holland shared the behind-the-scenes story during the film’s global fan event at the STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam on June 17.

He explained that the tattoo, which is located on the bottom of his foot and was inspired by his first Spider-Man movie, became visible during a scene where his character was not wearing clothes.

“I have a tattoo, and a fun little story is that it’s on the bottom of my foot, it’s the Spider-Man emblem from the first movie,” Holland explained.

The actor said the VFX team initially focused on removing the wires and perfecting the effects for the challenging sequence, but they later noticed the tattoo was still visible.

“They were like, ‘Yeah, the wires are gone, looks great.’ But you could still see the tattoo on the bottom of my foot,” Holland recalled.

The visual effects team eventually digitally removed the tattoo from the final version of the movie, solving the unexpected continuity issue.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with the world no longer remembering Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man.

Holland will return as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, who reprises her role as MJ. The couple’s real-life relationship also helped them navigate certain emotional scenes during filming.

Earlier, Holland told Empire magazine that he was able to ask Zendaya for honest feedback while working on the film, something he said he would not have done with another co-star.

Zendaya praised Holland’s deeper involvement in the franchise, saying he has become closely connected to every aspect of bringing the character back to the big screen.
