Beyoncé reveals emotional reason behind Jay-Z’s hair transformation
The pop shares details of Jay-Z’s six-day hair transformation ahead of a festival performance
Pop icon Beyoncé has shared the personal story behind her husband Jay-Z’s recent hair transformation, revealing that his decision to remove his long-standing dreadlocks was driven by a deeply emotional tribute to his late father.
In a video posted on YouTube, Beyoncé explained that Jay-Z had spent years growing and maintaining his locs before deciding to comb them out ahead of a live performance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he appeared with The Roots earlier this year.
According to Beyoncé, the rapper made the decision to honour his father, Adnis Reeves, by recreating a hairstyle he once wore.
“Jay told me a few months ago that he was planning on combing out his locks for his Philly show with The Roots,” she said. “He wanted to do this in honour of his father. His dad used to rock a ‘fro, so he wanted to rock a ‘fro in his honour.”
She added that the process took nearly a week and required significant patience, as his locs had been maintained for more than eight years.
Beyoncé also reflected on the personal meaning behind Jay-Z’s original decision to grow his hair, saying it was inspired by a moment with their daughter, Blue, who had struggled with confidence about her natural hair.
“When she told her father that, it inspired Jay to grow out his hair,” she explained. “We really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls.”
The singer further praised Jay-Z’s care and commitment to maintaining his hair over the years, noting that the process of removing the locs became an emotional experience for both of them.
“It wasn’t just one person who removed his locs, it was a family affair,” she said, adding that the transformation reflected growth and change.
Footage from the process showed Jay-Z seated as several people worked to gently comb out his locs, with the rapper describing the experience as intense, saying, “It’s not for the faint of heart.”
After six days, Jay-Z debuted his new afro on stage in Philadelphia, completing the transformation ahead of his performance.
Beyoncé concluded by praising his patience and the significance of the moment, calling the final look “beautiful from start to finish.”
