Martha Stewart has paid an emotional tribute to legendary music executive Clive Davis, describing him as a “mentor, neighbor, and one of the most thoughtful and caring human beings” following news of his death at the age of 94.
Davis passed away on Monday, June 22, 2026, at his home in Manhattan, according to his representative, after an age-related illness. He was surrounded by family and loved ones at the time of his passing.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Stewart reflected on their decades-long friendship, recalling Davis not only as a towering figure in the music industry but also as a personal source of guidance and kindness.
“My lovely friend, mentor and neighbor, the indomitable, indefatigable, amazing, talented, intuitive, Mister Clive Davis passed away today,” she wrote.
“I will miss him so very, very much. Not only did he provide us with some of the best performers and their music for more than half a century, he was the kindest, most thoughtful and caring human being.”
She went on to remember attending numerous milestone events hosted by Davis over the years, including Grammy celebrations, private dinners, and gatherings honoring artists he worked with.
Stewart also noted that their friendship extended into her own philanthropic work, including events connected to the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai.
“Over the years I attended many of his super duper Grammy parties, his birthday celebrations, his dinners honoring his artists and friends,” she added. “We will miss you Clive!!!!!”
Stewart and Davis shared a long-standing friendship that spanned decades, frequently appearing together at industry events.
Their most recent public appearance was in January 2026 at Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles.
Davis’ representative confirmed that he had recently been hospitalized in late May but was discharged in early June and was reportedly in good spirits during his recovery.
In a family statement, Davis was remembered both as a transformative figure in global music and as a devoted family man.
“To the world, our father was the iconic music legend whose vision, instincts, and relentless pursuit of excellence shaped the soundtrack of countless lives,” the statement read.
“To his family, Clive was Dad and Granddaddy… the source of wisdom, strength, encouragement, and unconditional love.”
Over a career spanning decades, Davis played a pivotal role in shaping the modern music industry.
He held leadership positions at major labels including Columbia Records, RCA Music Group, and BMG, and founded Arista Records in 1974.
His legacy includes signing and supporting some of the most influential artists in music history, including Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin, Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin, and Carlos Santana, among many others.
Davis is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and longtime partner Greg Schriefer.
