Vet shares essential advice to prevent dog tick infestation

Zigly Head Vet Dr Deepak Saraswat shared five essential health tips on Wednesday to help pet parents prevent dog tick infestation during the warm and humid monsoon season. The blood-sucking parasites thrive in damp weather conditions and attach themselves to pets during outdoor walks, playtime, or contact with other animals. Saraswat cautioned that leaving the parasites untreated can cause serious health complications for domestic canines.

HT Lifestyle reported that the veterinary specialist compiled a comprehensive safety guide to assist owners in mitigating parasites. The medical recommendations highlight specific preventative practices that target common breeding grounds and reduce transmission risks.

Regular Grooming and Inspection

• Targeted checks: Parasites frequently hide in concealed areas such as behind the ears, under the collar, between toes, and around the tail. Owners must inspect their pets thoroughly after every outdoor activity.
• Early detection: Frequent grooming and deep coat brushing help identify the pests before they multiply across the skin.

Maintain Proper Hygiene

• Environment cleaning: Keeping the pet and its immediate surroundings clean remains extremely important.
• Washing routines: Handlers should wash pet bedding, blankets, and toys regularly while vacuuming carpets or furniture.

Use Preventive Treatments

• Medical consultation: Owners should consult a veterinarian to select suitable anti-tick shampoos, sprays, powders, spot-on treatments, medicated collars, or oral medications.
• Consistent application: These preventive treatments require consistent application throughout the warmer months when the parasites remain highly active.

Avoid Prone Areas

• Hazardous zones: Tall grass, thick bushes, gardens, and damp areas serve as common breeding grounds.
• Designated paths: Keeping animals on designated paths during outdoor activities lowers their physical exposure.

Safe Home Environment

• Lawn maintenance: Trimming grass regularly and keeping outdoor areas dry minimises the presence of pests.
• Pest control: Professional pest control measures should be considered if local household infestations occur frequently.

Saraswat noted that the pests can transmit infections to humans and listed warning signs including excessive scratching, licking, skin irritation, redness, loss of appetite, lethargy, and fever.
