Man arrested after four family members die in drunk driving accident

A Virginia man faced multiple second-degree murder charges on Tuesday after a devastating drunk driving accident killed a family of four in Springfield Township, Michigan. Charles Dean Pace of Glen Allen, Virginia, was arraigned on July 7, 2026, following his arrest and booking into the Oakland County Jail on July 3, 2026. Local authorities formally charged the suspect with four counts of second-degree murder and four counts of operating while intoxicated causing death.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated that prosecutors alleged Pace operated a Ford F-250 truck travelling south on Interstate 75 near East Holly Road on July 1, 2026. The prosecution asserted that the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic lanes at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour before the collision occurred.

Michigan State Police investigators allegedly discovered that Pace possessed a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit during the incident. Officials identified the deceased victims as 23-year-old Zakeria Sharon Dodson, 24-year-old Tieree Powell, three-year-old Nalani Powell, and two-year-old Karter Powell. McDonald emphasised that the victims did not die in a standard mishap, stating they were killed because of the choices made by the defendant to drive drunk, fast, and recklessly.

A GoFundMe fundraising campaign commenced to support the Powell family with their upcoming funeral costs. The online campaign description noted that the tragedy left the community with shattered hearts as they mourned the unimaginable loss of the four family members. The fundraiser described Powell as a devoted father who found his greatest joy with his children, while characterising Dodson as a loving mother who raised her children with compassion and strength. The online memorial initiative successfully raised nearly $54,000 of its overall $100,000 financial goal at the time of publication.
