15-year-old boy stabbed to death near El Monte school

A 15-year-old boy with dreams of a professional football career has died after being stabbed during a fight in El Monte, California, according to his uncle. Aziel Zacapala was killed near Potrero School on Thursday at around 1pm local time, KTLA reported. Two adult victims were also injured in the incident, though both are now in stable condition.

Fight led to fatal stabbing

The stabbing broke out during a fight, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and the El Monte Police Department. Zacapala was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after. No suspects have been identified at the scene, and the investigation remains ongoing. The sheriff's department said: "Investigators are still working to determine whether more than one suspect was involved. Currently, there is no suspect description available."

Uncle pays tribute to 'beloved nephew'

Daniel Aguilar, who identified himself as Zacapala's uncle, set up a GoFundMe page on Saturday, 11 July, to support the teenager's family. He described his nephew as "a beloved nephew, friend, son and high school football player."

"As his uncle Danny, I am heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. Aziel was a good kid, full of promise and kindness, and he had big dreams of making it to the big leagues as a football player," Aguilar wrote in the fundraiser description. He recalled that Zacapala had been enjoying time with friends just days before his death. "Just six days ago, Aziel was doing well, spending time with his football friends at Rosemead Park's 4th of July event, enjoying life and the camaraderie that meant so much to him."

"His dedication to his sport and his positive spirit inspired everyone around him, and his absence leaves a deep void in our family and community," Aguilar continued.

Mother left to support family alone

Aguilar revealed that Zacapala's mother is unemployed and is now raising two other children while grieving her son's death. "Now, she faces the overwhelming daily hardships of supporting her family during this devastating time. We are reaching out to our community with a heavy heart, asking for your support to help his mom as she navigates this painful chapter," he wrote. "As a father of three myself, I cannot begin to imagine the pain my sister is experiencing," he added.

Football team rallies support

Rosemead High School's football team shared the fundraiser on its official X account, writing: "Aziel was a bright light in our community, and his loss is deeply felt. His family is facing immense challenges right now and your support can make a real difference." Those wishing to support the family can donate via the GoFundMe page set up by Aguilar.
