OpenAI reportedly developing screenless AI speaker with moving parts
Report reveals OpenAI's first hardware device is an AI home companion
OpenAI is reportedly developing its first consumer hardware device—a screenless AI-powered speaker designed to function as a personalised home companion with deep integration into ChatGPT.
According to a Bloomberg report, the device remains in development and is being described internally as a "humanlike AI companion" that lives in the home, marking OpenAI's long-anticipated entry into the consumer hardware market.
AI companion designed to learn from users
Unlike traditional smart speakers, the reported device would feature no display and would instead focus on conversational interactions powered by artificial intelligence.
Sources familiar with the project said the device is intended to develop a distinct personality and learn about its owner over time to deliver increasingly personalised responses. It would reportedly have access to parts of a user's digital life, including emails, to better understand preferences and daily routines.
The report also claims the product will include movable mechanical components, allowing it to physically interact with users and serve as a tangible extension of ChatGPT.
Former Apple engineers helping develop device
Bloomberg reported that the project has been developed with the help of several former Apple engineers who previously worked on products including the iPhone and Mac.
The reported hardware push comes as OpenAI continues to face legal challenges from Apple, which recently sued the AI company, alleging it misappropriated trade secrets related to hardware development. OpenAI has denied the allegations.
According to Bloomberg's sources, OpenAI believes its upcoming product differs significantly from Apple's existing hardware lineup and is unlikely to infringe on the company's intellectual property.
The reported device also reflects growing interest in AI-focused consumer hardware, as technology companies race to create dedicated devices that move beyond smartphones and traditional smart speakers. OpenAI has not officially announced the product or provided a timeline for its release.
