Chinese firms launch agentic AI smartphones at WAIC 2026
Handsets running agentic AI smartphones process tasks locally, despite growing app access restrictions
Chinese tech firms showcased a new generation of agentic AI smartphones at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai. The handsets marked a major shift from standard digital assistants to pocket-sized artificial intelligence capable of executing complex, multi-step real-world tasks directly on the device. Unlike models focused on isolated features like photo editing or voice dictation, these devices used built-in AI agents integrated directly into the operating system to perform complex workflows across software platforms via simple voice or text commands.
Prominent examples at the event included Nubia's NaviX Ultra, which was powered by ByteDance's Doubao AI chatbot tool to collaborate natively across multiple applications. Prototypes on display demonstrated on-device autonomy by comparing e-commerce prices across different retailers, planning travel itineraries, and ordering food independently.
Processing AI models locally on phone hardware rather than relying on the cloud provided significant consumer benefits. Speed-focused tasks such as live audio translation, document summarisation, and file searching occurred with zero latency. Furthermore, local processing addressed privacy concerns by keeping data on the handset, offering users superior data security as tech firms raced to roll out advanced devices capable of executing voice commands ranging from food ordering to message composition.
However, widespread adoption of agentic AI smartphones faced a major corporate roadblock regarding app access control. Days after release, tech giants including Alibaba, Tencent, and JD.com restricted the built-in assistant's access to their respective platforms. App developers remained hesitant to allow AI agents to act as middlemen, fearing a loss of direct user engagement, data control, and tracking to hardware manufacturers.
An associate research director at US market intelligence firm IDC stated that gaining broad access to third-party applications remained a key sticking point for the technology. She noted that platforms wanted to maintain direct contact with their users to avoid losing control to another party, creating an ongoing hurdle for the revolutionary devices.
