Expert reveals key kitchen decor ideas to refresh home interiors

Shreem Interior Design founder and principal designer Arth Kumar shared expert kitchen decor ideas designed to elevate culinary spaces while balancing utility and aesthetics. Speaking in an interview with HT Lifestyle, the interior designer emphasised that the kitchen serves as the primary hub of the modern home, frequently requiring design updates due to high daily foot traffic.

Kumar highlighted strategic lighting as an essential element that maintains safety, improves functionality, and creates an inviting atmosphere during meal preparation. He recommended installing bright under-cabinet LED strips to eliminate countertop shadows, using flush mounts or discreet recessed ceiling fixtures for overall warmth, and adding internal cabinet illumination to feature glassware or artwork.

He also suggested hanging grand chandeliers or oversized pendant lights above central islands. Kumar described the multi-functional island as the ultimate anchor for modern modular kitchens, advising homeowners to connect the sink, cooktop, and refrigerator efficiently while maintaining ample walkway space and incorporating sleek bar stools for seating.

Curated Tableware and Smart Cabinetry

Curated tableware provides a bridge between everyday utility and luxury interior styling. Kumar advised openly displaying vibrant serving bowls, artisanal teapots, and cake stands, alongside heavy textured ceramic dinnerware to enhance casual dining experiences. He recommended regularly editing collections to prevent physical clutter and introducing seasonal tableware for special gatherings.

Smart storage design maximises spatial efficiency while eliminating daily visual clutter. Kumar suggested replacing lower base cabinets with deep pull-out drawers to easily access heavy pots, alongside built-in organisers, spice pull-outs, and hidden appliance garages. Selecting soft-close hinges and matching cabinet profiles to the broader architectural flow further improves durability and seamless aesthetics.

Natural Elements, Open Shelving, and Tiling

Incorporating live plants introduces vibrancy, improves indoor air quality, and offers fresh cooking ingredients. Homeowners can cultivate lemongrass, curry leaf, pandan, rosemary, mint, and coriander near natural light, alongside hardy snake plants or trailing money plants. Fresh floral arrangements displayed in vintage pitchers, colourful ceramics, or vases also enhance windowsills and island counters. Furthermore, open shelving creates an airy aesthetic suitable for displaying vintage mugs, heirloom china, or daily dinnerware. Finally, choosing large-format marble-look porcelain tiles or matching splashback tiles to flooring creates a unified palette, while patterned mosaic feature walls add distinct personality.
