Savannah Guthrie returns to 'Today' after shocking studio intruder scare

Savannah Guthrie returned to the Today show on Monday, July 20, making her first appearance since last week's shocking security breach at NBC's Studio 1A in New York City.

The veteran anchor opened the broadcast alongside Sheinelle Jones, who filled in for Craig Melvin as he began a pre-planned family vacation.

Guthrie welcomed Jones to the desk, noting that Melvin was away on scheduled leave.

Guthrie's return comes days after an intruder allegedly entered the Today studio on July 16, confronting Melvin, shouting racial slurs and asking for fellow co-host Al Roker before being detained by security.

Authorities later identified the suspect as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove. According to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, he has been charged with third-degree burglary as a hate crime and third-degree menacing as a hate crime. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

A temporary order of protection has also been issued for both Melvin and Roker, with the suspect due back in court on July 22.

Melvin addressed viewers during the July 17 broadcast, reassuring fans that everyone involved was safe and confirming the show was cooperating fully with the NYPD's investigation.

Laura Jarrett, who filled in for Guthrie that day, also emphasised that the team was relieved no one had been injured.

While Guthrie has not publicly commented on the incident, NBC News previously confirmed that the intruder was taken into custody without any physical altercation or injuries.

Despite returning to the morning show, Guthrie is expected to take another short break soon to film the upcoming Wordle game show, which will be executive-produced by Jimmy Fallon and is scheduled to premiere next year.
