Google launched a new selfie video recovery feature on July 23, 2026, offering users an alternative method to regain access to locked accounts. The opt-in security tool allows individuals to record a short video clip of their face on a mobile device or PC when they forget passwords or lose access to two-factor authentication apps, enrolled computers, and primary mobile devices.
The tech firm announced the update across its official platforms, explaining that the system compares a newly recorded video against a previously stored reference video to confirm account ownership. To complete the initial setup, users look into their device camera and follow on-screen prompts directing them through simple head movements. This process captures multiple facial angles without requiring specialised hardware like infrared light sensors.
Google securely stores the initial reference video in the cloud using encryption, enabling cross-device access whenever recovery proves necessary. Account holders retain complete control over their recorded data and may delete stored clips at any point via their account settings. While the reference video serves exclusively for account sign-in by default, users can manually opt to share it for supplementary purposes.
When attempting a recovery sign-in, the system prompts users to film a fresh video executing guided head movements to prove the recording is happening live. The software then evaluates the live video against the encrypted reference file. Google integrated multiple protection layers alongside its standard security protocols to prevent impersonation attempts utilising static photographs or generative deepfake videos.
The search giant is releasing the authentication tool globally through a phased rollout. Account holders can check their eligibility and activate the selfie video security feature directly by visiting g.co/signin-selfie.
