Microsoft forces LG to disable McAfee pop-ups on monitors

Microsoft intervened to stop Windows 11 users with LG monitors from receiving unwanted McAfee trial pop-up advertisements.The Verge reported that Windows chief Pavan Davuluri confirmed LG agreed to immediately disable the McAfee pop-ups from its LG Monitor App Installer. Davuluri stated that Microsoft plans to keep improving system experiences alongside its ecosystem partners.

The intervention followed widespread user backlash regarding large pop-up ads promoting McAfee antivirus and LG applications appearing when users connected LG monitors to their computers. Connecting the display triggered a background Windows driver update that silently installed LG driver updates and software without obtaining explicit permission from users. Reports regarding the automatic installation process date back to 2024.

LG defended its software distribution practices in a statement sent to Windows Latest, maintaining that McAfee is never installed automatically or without user authorisation. The electronics manufacturer explained that its app installer is distributed through official Microsoft channels and only includes the security software as an optional choice. LG added that its installation application does not access, collect, or transmit any personal customer data.

Automatic application installation features remain a broader issue across hardware manufacturers. Reports noted that Dell similarly auto-installs an Alienware Command Centre application on Windows systems when users attach Alienware monitors. Additionally, LG was recently found pushing advertisement notifications on its smart televisions during startup, highlighting the limits of external software interventions. Microsoft continues working with hardware partners to address automatic installation concerns across the Windows ecosystem.
